Mistubishi Has Opted Out Of The Honda-Nissan Merger, But Will It Survive On Its Own?
French automaker Renault is expected to pull out of the merger as well.
When Honda and Nissan first announced their decision to join forces to become one of the world’s largest automakers, questions remained about whether Mitsubishi and French automaker Renault would be willing to stick with Nissan. But now, Mitsubishi is allegedly planning to pull out of the future merger and go fully independent.
While an official statement isn’t expected until early next month, Japanese newspaper Yomiuri reports that Mitsubishi has already decided to cut ties with Nissan, though it’s likely that the merger will keep a stake in Mitsubishi it’s solidified in 2026.
The automaker hasn’t yet announced why it wants to pull out of the merger, and the decision is rather questionable considering that its latest Outlander, the first fully-redesigned product in years, wouldn’t have been possible without help from Nissan. While sales across the lineup have stayed at a healthy level, dealers are left with aging products, and Mitsubishi has just cut the affordable Mirage from its stable.
Renault, meanwhile, hasn’t provided its stance on the merger, though it will likely cut ties with Nissan as well, as Honda allegedly wants to exclude the French company from the merger. It’s possible that Mitsubishi could continue its partnership with Renault without Nissan, though this is purely speculation.
With so many questions remaining about how brands will fare under the wide umbrella of Honda and Nissan, we’re expecting more official word from all companies involved within the coming months.

Say hello to the Cybercab, which lacks a steering wheel or pedals but packs plenty of that cartoon-like cyberpunk styling. Assuming the Cybercab won’t face the same setbacks as the Cybertruck and the yet-to-be-released Roadster, Tesla plans to release this driverless machine by 2027.
While the Cybercab is just a prototype for now, Tesla promises that the finished product will undercut the $30K mark when it arrives before 2027, though CEO Elon Musk admits that he tends to be a “little optimistic with time frames.” For now, specifics like range, powertrains, and the essential self-driving tech remain glaringly absent, but we’re expecting all the important details to emerge within the next few years.
