PENSACOLA, Fl. (WALA) – FOX10 News has exclusively obtained body camera footage showing the arrest of a Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy.
In December, Deputy Danny Contreras was arrested in Pensacola.
Contreras and two other men are accused of going on a “joyride” in a Pensacola city-owned UTV.
According to the sheriff’s office, Contreras was placed on leave following the arrest.
Police report details Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy arrest
On Thursday, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack said Contreras pled no contest to the charges and was referred to the pre-trial intervention program.
Sheriff Mack says Contreras has since returned back to patrol division after being suspended without pay for 30 days.
In the body cam footage, Contreras says it was a stupid mistake, that shouldn’t have happened.
It all started on December 8, around 3:00 in the morning.
A downtown bar employee told a Pensacola PD officer they noticed the men on the UTV near South Jefferson Street and called 911.
“I looked and they were on it and I just called in. It was parked right next to this,” the man told the officer as he showed him the parking garage where the UTV was. “As I’m on the phone with 911 they were driving. They came out of the garage and then they were driving south.”
The employee also said Contreras and the men came back by the bar “waving” from the UTV.
It didn’t take long for officers to catch up with the men and confront them.
“We were just going home. I was just going to my vehicle. We were at Seville,” Contreras told the officer. “And then we were going home.”
Contreras told the officer he was looking for his truck inside the Jefferson Street parking garage and was getting ready to head home.
According to the police report he and his friends decided to stop and hop into the UTV first.
Contreras told the officer a man told him he could ride it and thought it’d be funny.
“Did he give you permission to take it?” the officer asked.
Contreras replied, “He said it was his…”
Officers appeared not to believe that story.
“So if you’re walking to your car that’s in the garage why would you get into it?” the officer asked.
“We were just driving around, we thought it’d be funny,” Contreras replied.
The officers identified Contreras as the driver and he was originally charged with vehicle theft and given a $1,000 bond.
Contreras calls the whole ordeal “a stupid mistake.”
“We just made a stupid mistake,” he said. “riding around and we just hopped in…probably shouldn’t have hopped in.”
Sheriff Mack says his charge was reduced to trespassing which is a misdemeanor.
FOX10 News reached out to Contreras’ lawyer but did not hear back from anyone.
