Heart-pounding video shows the moment a shoplifting suspect allegedly tried to shoot an Ohio police officer at point-blank range inside a Walmart only to be stopped when his gun appeared to malfunction and a store security worker intervened.

The dramatic incident unfolded Thursday in Canton after the suspect and a woman were detained for allegedly stealing items from the store, according to reports.

The pair were taken to a security room, where a police officer is seen questioning and searching the male suspect, identified as Shane Newman, 21, by FOX 8.

Video from the officer’s body camera, which had been placed on a table, initially showed a calm scene, with a Walmart employee handing the officer a pen and paper as the two suspects sat on a bench.

Moments later, the situation exploded.

Newman suddenly turned, pulled out a gun and attempted to shoot the officer as the woman screamed, “No, no, no!” A clicking sound could be heard as Newman apparently pulled the trigger.

The Walmart worker immediately jumped on Newman in an effort to restrain him, but Newman raised the gun again and attempted to fire a second time and another click could be heard.

The worker then knocked the gun from Newman’s hands as the officer drew his weapon and shouted, “Get back! Get back!”

The officer then took control of matters and pinned Newman to the floor until additional police arrived. Both suspects were taken into custody.

In the bodycam footage, the officer told responding police Newman had “pulled the gun out, pointed it at my head and pulled the trigger,” but the weapon did not fire.

The officer said he drew his own weapon and would have shot Newman but feared hitting the Walmart employee as the worker struggled to disarm the suspect. He also acknowledged missing the gun concealed in Newman’s shoulder bag during the initial search.

The officer said he had just been alerted seconds before the attack that Newman had an active warrant for his arrest and was classified as “armed and dangerous.”

Newman was charged with attempted murder and felonious assault on a police officer, court records show.

The woman, identified as Katerina Jeffrey, was charged with complicity to commit robbery and having weapons under disability for possession of ammunition, FOX 8 reported.

Before the violence erupted, the police officer asked Newman if he had anything on him as part of the search. Newman said all he had was a cellphone, and then he voluntarily handed over a small container from his pocket that investigators said contained illegal drugs, according to FOX 8.

“Are we going to jail?” Jeffrey asked the police officer.

“Not unless something crazy happens,” the officer replied.

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – 39-year-old Marcus Leonard Smith was shot and killed by Akron Police following a traffic stop on Monday, February 17.

Police say he stole a gun and a car and ended up in Akron where he was born.

Newly released police body camera video shows the deadly encounter as gunfire is exchanged between Smith and Akron Police officers.

In the video, you repeatedly hear Akron officers yelling for Smith to drop the gun, then it appears Smith takes off running as patrol officers are in pursuit. This all happened on Ira Avenue in Akron just before 9 a.m. last Monday.

Smith who was injured by the gunfire fell onto the snow that covered the street and before officers could render first aid they pulled Smith away from the gun that police say was in his hand.

Smith was visiting from Cincinnati when police spotted the vehicle in Akron. They also received a 911 call from Smith’s father who alerted them that he appeared to be having mental health issues before taking his father’s car.

Police say, Smith opened fire on them after the stop and they returned fire.

His family spoke to only one station about the hurt and the loss of a young man who was studying for his PhD.

They also say he was struggling with some mental health issues for which he sought treatment. His mother Beverly Ivory is traumatized by his death.

“The person that they saw Monday is not Marcus Smith. That is real, this mental illness. That was I want to relay, get help, and seek help for your loved ones.”

The police-involved shooting is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik gave the following statement after the release of the bodycam:

The body worn camera footage released today underscores the dangerous situation that our officers encountered on Monday morning. During the incident, officers attempted to stop Marcus Smith, who was armed and repeatedly fired a weapon. I remain very thankful that no other lives were lost in this incident. My thoughts are with all of the responding officers as they process this traumatic encounter, with the neighborhood residents who witnessed it, and with our officers who begin shifts each day knowing that they may have to respond to a similar call.

In recent days, the Akron Beacon Journal has reported on Mr. Smith’s life and his struggles with mental health. I want to acknowledge these challenges and share my condolences to his family members. I also want to be clear that nothing excuses or justifies dangerous or deadly actions.

For anyone who is in need of support with mental health challenges, reaching out for help is an incredibly meaningful step – for yourself and for others. Anyone in our community can start that process by calling 2-1-1 at any time or texting their zip code to 898-211 for assistance via text to be connected to resource providers.Mayor Shammas Malik, Akron

Police Chief Brian Harding also released a statement, saying:

This incident highlights the challenging and sometimes dangerous encounters our officers face every day. Often, our officers are confronted with difficult decisions in the interest of public safety and in the most extreme cases, those decisions can mean life or death. This was a dangerous interaction that had the potential to become much worse. I’m incredibly grateful that no innocent bystanders or officers were harmed. The Akron Police Department remains committed to the public safety of all our residents as the highest priority.

Any loss of life is tragic and my condolences go out to the family of Marcus Smith as they grieve the loss of their loved one.Chief Brian Harding, Akron Police

A jealous, drunk Oklahoma husband shot his wife dead inside his Ford F-350 after she received a phone call from another man, then drove her bleeding body to a Walmart to meet paramedics, police say.

Kyle Shackelford, 32, is charged with manslaughter for killing his wife, Rylee Shackelford, 25, on May 26, according to court records.

The arrest affidavit, obtained by Law&Crime, outlined what occurred that Monday night before officers met with the Shackelfords at a Walmart in Garvin County, located at 2008 West Grant Avenue in Pauls Valley.

Kyle Shackelford allegedly flew into a deadly, drunken rage after answering his wife’s phone and finding her former boyfriend — now just a “friend” — on the other end, according to police who interviewed the man.

“[The former boyfriend] said that he had received two missed calls from Rylee earlier that night and when [the friend] returned the video call to Rylee, Kyle answered the phone asking who [the friend] was,” the affidavit alleges. “[The friend] said he heard Rylee in the background asking for her phone back. When the call disconnected, [the friend] attempted to call back several times with no answer. [The friend] received a Snapchat text that read, ‘Please stop before I get my a— beat, I’m begging you.’ [The friend] answered the text but never heard from Rylee again.”

Cops met up with Kyle Shackelford, who was with his father-in-law inside the F-350 at the Pauls Valley Walmart just before 3 a.m., according to police. They found Rylee Shackelford unconscious in the passenger seat — pale, not breathing, and turning blue. The couple had been at a local casino earlier in the night and Kyle Shackelford had been drinking heavily there after downing “7, 8 beers from 4 or 5 o’clock,” per investigators.

Surveillance video allegedly shows the defendant ordering “double Apple Crown (whiskey) and Sprite along with a double Malibu, a mixed drink containing rum, two different times,” according to the affidavit. He was spotted drinking both whiskey and part of the rum drink, cops say. Kyle Shackelford was also allegedly captured on surveillance buying “BuzzBallz Chillers” at a local store before the fatal shooting.

The couple had been at a casino and had just arrived home when the conflict began, according to the affidavit. The couple first fought in the house, then both went out to the couple’s truck.

“Kyle said that while he and Rylee were seated in his truck … Kyle moved a pistol from where he had placed it on the console,” the affidavit alleges. “The gun fired once, striking Rylee in the left side.”

During his police interview and while speaking to cops at the Walmart, Kyle Shackelford allegedly exhibited signs that indicated a “noticeable level” of intoxication, including “red watery eyes and a slurred speech,” the affidavit says.

Kyle Shackelford allegedly said the shooting unfolded while he and Rylee Shackelford were “bickering.” He told investigators at the station that “he and Rylee ‘had been fighting’ after a friend of a friend called Rylee’s phone.” Kyle and Rylee Shackelford then began to argue.

“Kyle said he was frustrated and went outside to his truck,” the affidavit alleges. “Kyle admitted that he had been drinking and wasn’t leaving. Rylee got in the passenger seat of the truck as Kyle went to get in the driver’s side. Kyle said Rylee was mad and hitting the console where he had set a pistol.”

Kyle Shackelford claimed that as he went to “swipe” the pistol away from the console, it “went off” and shot Rylee Shackelford in the left abdomen. “Kyle said that he went inside to get Rylee’s father … to drive them to the hospital,” the affidavit says.

While on the phone with 911, Kyle Shackelford reported that he was in the truck with his wife to get medical attention and agreed to meet an ambulance at Walmart. Rylee Shackelford’s dad was allegedly driving, according to police.

When cops found the gun Kyle Shackelford allegedly used, it had one empty cartridge still chambered and three live cartridges loaded in the magazine, the affidavit says.

“The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Report states that the bullet entered the left anterolateral chest, 16 inches down from the top of her head and 9 inches from the midline,” the document alleges. “The bullet fractured the left anterior rib #5, perforated the heart through the left ventricle and right atrium and was recovered in the right anterior chest wall. In the written report, no bullet damage was noted on the left arm which could indicate her left arm was pulled back or raised in a defensive manner.”

Kyle Shackelford was booked into the Garvin County Jail on Aug. 26 and was released after posting a $100,000 bond. He’s due back in court on Sept. 12.
