Murder Suspect Blows His Cover by Shoplifting at Walmart: Cops

Video shows moment shoplifting suspect pulls out gun, attempts to shoot officer

A man in Ohio is facing attempted murder charges after he pulled out a gun and attempted to shoot a police officer – and it was all caught on video.

CANTON, Ohio (KABC) — A man in Ohio is facing attempted murder charges after he pulled out a gun and attempted to shoot a police officer – and it was all caught on video.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon at a Walmart in Canton, Ohio, when police arrested 21-year-old Shane Newman and 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey on suspicion of shoplifting.

In the video, you hear Jeffrey asking an officer, “Are we going to jail?”

“Not unless something crazy happens,” the officer responds.

Before Newman sat down, he was patted down.

“Nothing on you that’s going to poke me, stab me?” the officer asked Newman.

“No,” Newman responded.

Minutes pass, then suddenly, Newman pulls out a gun.

“While processing the two suspects in the store’s loss prevention office, the male produced a handgun and attempted to shoot the officer, but the weapon did not fire,” police said in a statement.

The officer and a Walmart loss prevention employee jumped on Newman, causing him to drop the gun.

No injuries were reported.

Jeffrey now faces a robbery charge and Newman faces several charges, including assaulting a peace officer and attempted murder.

(NewsNation) — A man suspected of shoplifting at an Ohio Walmart has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly drawing a gun and trying to shoot a police officer, authorities say.

Canton, Ohio, police responded Thursday afternoon to a report of retail theft and brought two suspects — Shane Newman and Katerina Jeffrey — into the store’s loss prevention office.

In the body camera video, an officer asks at least three times if Newman has anything on him that the police should know about.

Newman replies he has only his phone, which gives police officers a fake name. Ohio city council lets member accused of underage sex crimes retain seat

Five minutes into the incident, Newman is seen pulling out a gun and attempting to shoot the officer, but the weapon does not fire.

A Walmart employee gets Newman to drop his weapon, and the police officer wrestles the suspect to the ground. Jeffrey, his companion, can be heard telling him to stop.

Newman, 21, had 50 blue molly pills on him at the time of the arrest, published reports say.

Canton City Prosecutor Kristina Lockwood told local media that Newman has a history of failing to appear in court and was on probation.

Jeffrey, 23, has convictions for robbery and escape and allegedly had ammunition on her at the time of Thursday’s event.

Newman now faces charges that include attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery and drug possession. He’s being held in the Stark County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Jeffrey was charged with complicity to commit a robbery.

STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A man in Ohio was charged Thursday after police said he stole several items from a Walmart shopping center and tried to shoot an officer in the head.

Canton Police said the officer responded around 1:45 p.m. to the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE for suspected shoplifting.

The officer was inside the loss prevention office with 21-year-old Shane Newman and 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey when police said Newman pulled out a handgun.

Police said Newman then attempted to shoot the officer, but the gun did not fire.

A Walmart protection associate jumped onto Newman before he could try to shoot the gun again.

Newman was then taken to the floor by the officer and arrested.

In body camera video, the officer can be heard explaining he did not want to shoot Newman because he did not want to risk hitting the Walmart employee that was on top of him.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is always a top priority,” Jessie Carpenter, Walmart Asset Protection Operations Coach, said in a statement. “We’re proud of the brave action our asset protection associate took to maintain the safety of everyone in our store. We’ll continue to work with police as they investigate.”

Court records show the 21-year-old is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession and having a weapon under disability.

Police said Jeffrey is charged with complicity to commit a robbery.

Due to a previous felony conviction, Newman was not allowed to own or have a firearm, court records show.

After Newman’s arrest, officers said they recovered 50 blue pills identified as Molly, according to the records.

Newman and Jeffrey appeared in Canton Municipal court Friday. Newman was issued a $1 Million bond. Jeffrey was handed a $500,000 bond.

They are both expected back in Court on Dec. 23.

“This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection,” Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said. “Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call Canton police at 330-649-5800 or 330-489-3144.
