STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A man in Ohio was charged Thursday after police said he stole several items from a Walmart shopping center and tried to shoot an officer in the head.

Canton Police said the officer responded around 1:45 p.m. to the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE for suspected shoplifting.

The officer was inside the loss prevention office with 21-year-old Shane Newman and 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey when police said Newman pulled out a handgun.

Police said Newman then attempted to shoot the officer, but the gun did not fire.

A Walmart protection associate jumped onto Newman before he could try to shoot the gun again.

Newman was then taken to the floor by the officer and arrested.

In body camera video, the officer can be heard explaining he did not want to shoot Newman because he did not want to risk hitting the Walmart employee that was on top of him.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is always a top priority,” Jessie Carpenter, Walmart Asset Protection Operations Coach, said in a statement. “We’re proud of the brave action our asset protection associate took to maintain the safety of everyone in our store. We’ll continue to work with police as they investigate.”

Court records show the 21-year-old is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession and having a weapon under disability.

Police said Jeffrey is charged with complicity to commit a robbery.

Due to a previous felony conviction, Newman was not allowed to own or have a firearm, court records show.

After Newman’s arrest, officers said they recovered 50 blue pills identified as Molly, according to the records.

Newman and Jeffrey appeared in Canton Municipal court Friday. Newman was issued a $1 Million bond. Jeffrey was handed a $500,000 bond.

They are both expected back in Court on Dec. 23.

“This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection,” Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said. “Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call Canton police at 330-649-5800 or 330-489-3144.

Shoplifting suspect tries to shoot police officer at a Walmart in Canton, Ohio, cops say (Canton police via WOIO).

A shoplifting incident at an Ohio Walmart nearly turned deadly when the detained suspect took out a gun and tried to shoot a police officer in the head before the weapon jammed, cops say.

Body camera video obtained by Cleveland CBS affiliate WOIO showed two suspects, 21-year-old Shane Newman and 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey, were detained after they were allegedly caught shoplifting at a Walmart in Canton.

An officer patted him down and asked Newman if he had any weapons, to which he said no. The two suspects were seated in a security office when Newman, while no one was looking, pulled out a gun from his bag and pointed it at the officer, the video showed.

He allegedly pulled the trigger but it did not go off.

The loss prevention officer saw what was going on and yelled “hey!” as he grabbed for the gun and wrestled with Newman. An officer jumped on the suspect before disarming him.

“He pointed it right at my face and pulled the trigger,” the officer later said, as captured by body camera footage. “He tried to do it again.”

The officer was thankful for the loss prevention officer, saying he would put him up for an award. He also said he would have shot Newman but didn’t want to hit the Walmart employee as he wrestled the suspect for the gun.

A Walmart spokesperson hailed the actions of the employee.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is always a top priority,” Jessie Carpenter, Walmart asset protection operations coach said in a statement to WOIO. “We’re proud of the brave action our asset protection associate took to maintain the safety of everyone in our store. We’ll continue to work with police as they investigate.”

Court records show Newman is facing charges of attempted murder, felonious assaulting an officer, robbery and aggravated possession of drugs. Newman reportedly had about 50 molly pills. He’s in the Stark County Jail on a $1 million bond. Jeffrey stands accused of complicitly to commit robbery and remains in jail on a $500,000 bond.

Their next court date is scheduled for Tuesday.

“This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection,” Canton Police Chief John Gabbard told the TV station. “Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”

What started out as alleged shoplifting turned into attempted murder when an Ohio man pulled a gun on a police officer inside a Walmart Thursday … and the whole thing was caught on tape.

Watch this insane video … 21-year-old Shane Newman appears anxious, chewing on his gloved fingers while sitting inside Walmart’s loss prevention office around 1:40 PM. You can see him sneakily turn his back to the camera, and when he turns back around … he produces a gun.

While aiming the weapon at an officer off-camera, you can hear what appears to be the click of Newman pulling the trigger, but the gun never goes off.

Then, all hell breaks loose. The store’s loss prevention specialist dives on Newman, knocking the gun out of his hands, before the officer rushes in with a crushing knee to Newman’s midsection. Newman is then quickly wrestled to the ground.

WOIO reports Newman was not allowed to own or have a firearm due to a previous felony conviction. They also report he was in possession of 50 blue pills identified as Molly — AKA  MDMA. Police said an officer found two rounds of 9mm ammunition in Katrina’s pocket.

Canton Police tell TMZ … Newman was charged with attempt to commit murder; felonious assault on peace officer; robbery; aggravated possession of drugs; and weapons under disability … 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey was charged with complicity to commit robbery. They were both taken to Stark County Jail.
