ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman is facing charges after attempting to steal a vehicle from an elderly couple Saturday morning, according to the Ormond Beach Police Department.
Around 10:50 a.m., officers responded to an Exxon gas station located at 1633 N U.S. Highway 1 in Ormond Beach regarding a report of a stolen vehicle.
According to a news release, when officers arrived, they located one of the victims holding onto Marvette Perry, 36, of Jacksonville by the leg, attempting to keep her from fleeing in the vehicle.
Police said a Good Samaritan who saw what was happening before officers arrived, had drawn a firearm and held Perry at gunpoint to “ensure the safety of those involved,” but put the weapon away after he noticed Perry was not armed. The Good Samaritan remained at the scene, “reminding Perry he was armed” until officers arrived.
Neither of the vehicle owners were hurt during the incident.
Perry resisted arrest but was ultimately taken into custody, according to police.
One of the victims told police he exited Interstate 95 to a nearby gas station to use the restroom.
Perry’s arrest report states as the victim went to open the driver’s side door to go inside the gas station, Perry opened his door, pushed him out of the way and got into the driver’s seat.
The victim advised police he believed Perry would steal the vehicle with his wife sitting in the passenger seat, so he held onto Perry’s leg until officers arrived.
According to Perry’s arrest report, investigators found her vehicle parked at a nearby gas pump and the keys in her possession when she was placed under arrest.
Perry faces charges of robbery carjacking without a firearm or weapon, burglary with assault or battery, battery on a person 65 years of age or older and resisting an officer without violence.

Police say a fight broke out when a woman allegedly tried to steal the couple’s idling vehicle while one of the seniors was still sitting in the passenger seat.
Harlee Skinner-Jackson, 30, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of assault, as well as mischief under $5,000 and theft of a motor vehicle.
The accused was held pending a bail hearing.
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
The OPP says it only takes seconds for an “opportunistic theft” to occur.
“The OPP would like to remind all vehicle owners never to leave their vehicles unlocked or idling unattended, even for a short period of time,” police stated in a news release. “Always turn off your vehicle, remove the keys, and lock the doors — even if you’re just stepping away briefly.”

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A Jacksonville woman is behind bars after a failed attempt to carjack an elderly couple in Ormond Beach Saturday morning, police said.
Around 10:50 a.m., Ormond Beach Police said they arrived at the Exxon gas station at 1622 N US Hwy 1 in response to a report of a stolen car.
They found a man holding onto the leg of 36-year-old Marvette Perry to prevent her from escaping, police said. That man told police he parked his car at the Exxon to use the bathroom and before he could exit his car, Perry was opening his door.
Perry allegedly pushed the man out of the way and got into the driver’s side of the car while the man’s wife was in the front passenger seat, an arrest affidavit shows. He then grabbed Perry’s leg and held her until the police arrived.
Another bystander on the scene told police he withdrew his gun because he noticed Perry acting “weird. He held her at gunpoint for some time before putting the firearm away when it appeared Perry was unarmed.
According to police, Perry initially resisted arrest but was taken into custody with several charges, including carjacking, burglary with assault, and resisting an officer.
In an interview with police, Perry said she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and jumped in the couple’s car because she was feeling stressed, an affidavit shows.
The owners of the car were not injured in the incident.
