However, the most striking revelation from Keogh’s update concerns powertrain preferences: a staggering 87 percent of these reservation holders are drawn to the “Harvester” variants—the extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). This preference for the EREV models, which feature a gasoline-powered generator, a smaller ~63 kWh battery offering around 150 miles of electric range, and a total combined range of 500 miles, is a significant departure from the initial expectations for a brand rooted in electric innovation. Reports have indicated that the EREV truck’s towing capacity may be reduced from the BEV’s 10,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds, though Scout has emphasized that final figures are still months away. The potential reservation holders must now weigh the allure of the Scout brand and its iconic design against the potentially superior towing and hauling capabilities of competitors like the Ram REV or the next-generation Ford F-150 Lightning EREV. Keogh’s confidence in prevailing in these legal battles stems from the belief that direct sales are essential for maximizing efficiency. “Now that you have customer data and AI and monitoring tools, you can be dramatically more efficient with every single car that you make and where that car goes to squeeze every bit of profit out of it,” Keogh stated. He emphasized the importance of getting a $65,000 asset—the vehicle—into a driveway as quickly and efficiently as possible, a process he believes is best facilitated through a direct-sales network with showrooms and repair facilities located in proximity to the brand’s reservation holders. ### Engineering the Harvester: The Rationale Behind the Rear-Mounted Engine A significant portion of Keogh’s update focused on the engineering decisions behind the Scout EREV models, particularly the choice to mount the gasoline generator at the rear of the vehicle. Furthermore, this placement preserves the original frunk space, the SUV interior layout, and the truck bed design. Keogh also addressed concerns about driving dynamics, noting that the vehicle’s size and floor-mounted battery mitigate many of the handling issues that have historically plagued rear-engine vehicles. However, the rear-mounted engine configuration inevitably imposes limitations on payload and trailer tongue weight. This facility currently produces the 1.5-liter EA211 turbocharged engine and the 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged engine. The most logical deduction is that Scout will utilize the 1.5-liter aluminum-block engine, re-engineered for continuous-rpm operation to optimize generator output. This engine would likely operate in the 1,800–2,000 rpm range for level-ground cruising, increase to 3,200–4,200 rpm when towing uphill, and potentially reach 5,000 rpm for short bursts of peak power, demanding approximately 230 horsepower. ### The Oiling Challenge: A Complex Engineering Hurdle The engineering challenge of integrating a conventional inline engine into a rear-mounted, near-horizontal position is substantial. At such extreme angles, gravity’s assistance in oiling is significantly diminished, and this effect is further complicated when traversing inclines. The 1996–2000 Toyota Previa minivan, for instance, featured a bespoke inline-four engine designed to operate at a 15-degree angle from horizontal. This on-road minivan managed with a wet-sump lubrication system, complete with an automatic oil replenishment mechanism. However, the overall complexity and expense of the system ultimately led to its discontinuation after a single generation.
